Most of people mistake spraying for urination. But there are differences between them. Especially they should be aware that spraying is not a litter box problem. Cats with spraying problems may still use the litter box regularly.

Therefore, how can we tell the difference when cat spraying it stands straight up and lift its bottom high in air against a vertical area like a wall. Also spray usually has a distinct smell different from urine. If you don’t see the upright posture when cat does it then you are dealing with a cat with urinating problems.

Cats do this spraying due to several reasons.

To mark the territory – cats are extremely territorial animals. Some cats that are much socialized don’t need big territorial area. Your cat may do it when he feels threatened by an intruder cat or a dog. Blocking the view of outdoor may give a relief to such cats. But they may still feel the smell.

Unaltered males and female cats spray to attract a male. – For such cases spaying or neutering may change the behavior.

If cats spray on certain persons clothing, it may have some conflict with the person. There may be another cats’ or dogs’ smell in that persons clothing.

In multi-cat homes a cat sprays to communicate things to another cat – this case can get worse if they haven’t enough territorial space. If one of them decides that he hasn’t got much attention, you will have to deal with mischievous cats.

To relieve stress – a stressed cat is hard to handle for you and to cat itself. So try to lower your cats stress by playing with it and showing affection.

<img data-attachment-id='62' data-orig-size='1024,768' data-liked='0'width="150" height="112" src="http://understandingyourcat.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/bonding2.jpg?w=150&h=112" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="bonding" title="bonding" />

Most of the cat lovers want to have more than one cat in their home. They really love to spend time with cats. But when there is an old cat, introducing a new one is a bit challenging task (when you don’t know cat behavior). Some times it could make you disappointed and frustrated even when you think of the cat introduction. There are much social cats. They love to have new companions and take cat introduction seriously while some totally show their objection all the way. Either way, with proper cat introduction tactics, you can make sure that you are not heading for trouble.

You cannot do a cat introduction after bringing a new cat right away. He is new to the environment. First thing is to gain his trust and you should do it before he can trust any other animal at your home. Place him in a safe room. Safe room is ideally a small room with no outsider access. It includes

A litter box

Water bowl (at least five feet away from the litter box)

A hiding place

Something to sleep on (a blanket would be nice)

In order to make sure that two cats are getting used to each others’ smell, you can interchange their blankets every night.
When feeding them, put food at the two side of a same door. This will also make them more used to their smells. They may hiss or groan and that is totally natural.

Say, now they are much comfortable with their smells. It is time for the cat introduction. We are going to use a small trick here to make sure they are more comfortable with their smells (this trick has been created by studying cat behavior). Apply some baby powder to both of them. Especially, apply some baby powder under their chins. With both of them smelling same, they will be much comfortable in each others presence. However you better be stay prepared for the worst case too. You can use a blanket or a water bucket if there were to be any fight. After cat introduction, allow your old cat to wander around your new cat (and study cat behavior). Pay more attention to them till you are pretty sure that they won’t get involved in a fight. Time taken to get along is different from couple to couple. Some never get along at all. In such cases, they get used to tolerate each other. However, for many homes, it is good to have two cats if possible. Cats should have cat friends too.

<img data-attachment-id='58' data-orig-size='1024,768' data-liked='0'width="150" height="112" src="http://understandingyourcat.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/cats-urination2.jpg?w=150&h=112" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="cats-urination" title="cats-urination" />

ats make wonderful pets in every corner of the world. Where there are cats, it is fair to say that there are cats urinating problems too. And it is a major cat behavior problem everyone who has experienced this knows that it is very hard to remove the smell it causes. Ammonia, urea crystals and bacteria are the major causes of this problem. Using any kind of cleaner which contains ammonia, would worsen the case as cats love to eliminate where there is ammonia smell.

Keeping the litter box clean is the first wise thing to be done. Cats can smell things which people can’t, therefore when you clean the litter box, make sure that it is hundred percent clean (don’t just rely on your senses alone)

Some infections cause a cat avoiding litter box. Feline urinary tract infection is one of them. It shows following symptoms.

1. A pain while urination (They may moan while urinating.)

2. Excessive grooming is the second symptom – Study the cat behavior your pet shows

3. Avoiding the litter box is the most annoying sign (using the litter box very often or not using it at all is very important signs to be noted). When a cat feels pain in urination, it would associate that pain with the litter box. The result is cat avoiding the litter box. Cat thinks of the litter box as a scary and horrible thing to use. Bloody pee is a common symptom in urinary tract infection. Even though it is not deadly you should arrange a trip to a vet. So, not only the cat you will also be relived.

Most of the times, a calmed pet would not show urinating problems. Stressed and anxious ones often avoid the litter box.

There are good pet cleaners available in the pet store. Use a good cleaner to completely remove the odor due to cat urination. Covering up the smell doesn’t work at all; as cats can smell better than us (I have mentioned it earlier too). They repeat the same cat behavior if the place is not totally clean. There is a small trick to be used if your cat is doing it just because of its own stubbornness alone. (This trick has been created by studying the cat behavior issues) Put its foods there after totally cleaning the area. Cats never mess up the area they eat.

<img data-attachment-id='48' data-orig-size='775,619' data-liked='0'width="150" height="119" src="http://understandingyourcat.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/cat-girl11.jpg?w=150&h=119" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="cat-&-girl1" title="cat-&-girl1" />

Connection, bonding or link is the most important thing in any relationship. So, I know you also would love to have a better bonding with your pet. Knowing these five tips can change the way of your existing relationship. They will inspire every aspect of you relationship. Finally, it will remove the term “bad cat behavior” from your dictionary.

1.	Let’s play

Have a regular playtime with your pet. It would

•	Calm and sooth the pet

•	Build trust in a timed cat

•	Develop cats’ personality and reduces bad cat behavior

•	Make him healthier

•	Resolve most cat behavioral problems

Most of all, it will create an unbreakable bond between you and your pet.

Your cat never asks you to buy expensive cat toys from the pet store. It would love to play with simple cat toys you make for it. Also remember, most of the cat toys will be ripped into pieces within few minutes. You can make cat toys on your own from the things you find in your house. No cat plays with its toys. Cats love to hunt the toys. You can attach a little toy to a rope (a rope itself will be enough) and slowly slide it here and there in front of your cat. Cat should get the message that the prey is scared of him. This would make him extremely excited and ready to hunt. Do never make it a boring game by repeating the same steps. Introduce some variation. Do everything to send the message that the cat toy is alive. Even though you should make it difficult to achieve in the game, whenever it catches the cat toy, allow it to enjoy the achievement

You can use a small cat toy attached to the end of a thick string. A paper ball or a ping-pong ball is also a good choice. But, best cat toys are what stimulate your cat with the feeling that it is a hard target.

2.	Talking to your pet

You can communicate with your cat in many ways. Use a soft voice and do murmurs. Reply to his “meowing”. A cat can understand his owners’ feelings by listening to owners’ voice tone. Even though it may feel little bit silly, you can sing to your pet too.

3.	Give a good massage

Touch is a wonderful sense. You will find five best places to massage your pet. Shoulder blades, on the back right plus base of the tale, under the chin, right behind ears and bottom of the cheek. Massaging your cat will put him in a relaxed mood and he will be ready to play with you.

4.	Never try to use the upper hand

Cats love the feeling of control they have. Also, cats get tired due to petting or playing. Whenever your cat signs you that he wants to be alone, let him have what he wants. They like to be independent. Your cat will come to you when it knows that you are a person who values its independence.

5.	Spoil your cat with yummy treats (you can use to associate good cat behavior with yummy treats)

Whenever your cat shows you a cat behavior you desire, give him a yummy treat. Remember to know the limits Otherwise with your frequent treats; your cat may get sick.

Ouch! Why does my cat bite me?

<img data-attachment-id='17' data-orig-size='1024,768' data-liked='0'width="150" height="112" src="http://understandingyourcat.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/player.jpg?w=150&h=112" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="player" title="player" />

Cat biting is a common problem among lot of cat fans. And they define it as a bad cat behavior. If you want to make sure that your cat wont’ bite you, then you have to make him aware that it hurts. Usually cat biting happens as your cat does it without knowing it. We are going to discuss some little tricks to avoid your cat biting you.

If your cat bites you for a single time, that is not something to be taken serious. It could be that he had been excited by something unexpected. (Like a dog or something scary). This is not a bad cat behavior.

Don’t suddenly drag your hand away if your cat bites you. Freeze yourself and slowly push your hand towards him, if he bites. This will cause him to get confused and he will loosen up. Let him know that cat biting takes away all the fun. Stop whatever you were doing with him for minimum ten minutes. Punishing for cat biting won’t work. If you punish, he will associate the pain with you and will think of you as a scary person. So, he would avoid you at all cost.

Slap a shoe on the floor making a huge noise. Or do something like that to convey a strong message saying that cat biting hurts. Your cat will have to reconsider whether he wants to go through that experience once again.

There is another wonderful way to convey the message when cat biting happens. Shout with a loud noise (“OUCH!!!”)

Be more strategic and you can find many ways to acknowledge him without any punishment or resentment. Most of all, cat biting is not a bad cat behavior but it is a way cats use to communicate. Have you ever said one of your friends, “take me serious here!!!”. Cat biting conveys the same message no matter it is done for fun or due to anger. Have a pleasant time with your pet!

Top five reasons causing a cat to avoid the litter box – And how to retrain successfully.
<img data-attachment-id='12' data-orig-size='320,240' data-liked='0'width="150" height="112" src="http://understandingyourcat.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/litter-box.jpg?w=150&h=112" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="Litter box" title="Litter box" />

Cats make wonderful pets. But they can be rather annoying sometimes, with their bad cat behavior (Especially if they start avoiding the litter box). The whole house would get stinky and you will be getting enough with cleaning and washing the floor. So, retraining a cat to use the litter box is a very important thing for any cat owner.

These are the top five reasons for a cat to avoid his litter box.

1.	Stress (stress is the root course of most of bad cat behaviors)
2.	The litter box is too small for him
3.	Dirty litter box
4.	Cat doesn’t like the litter type
5.	Paws are injured. So, it is hard to dig litter (Newly de-clawed cats experience this often, it hurts when they dig litter, Association of pain with the litter box causes them to avoid the litter box).

First stance is to find the root course and avoid it. (We should understand that any of the above is not a bad cat behavior).

Isolate the cat in an empty room with a water dish and a litter box (the water dish must be minimum five feet away from the litter box), Provide a hiding place like a cardboard box. Give something he could sleep on. These are the only items to be within room (ideally). Keep the cat for a minimum three days in this room. Enter the room everyday and clean the litter box. Provide your pet something to eat. Play with him if you like. But don’t take him out yet

Let him visit another room with a new litter box, after three days. Wandering here and there within the house is to be prevented. If it eliminates outside, put him in the old room for another two or three days. If it eliminates outside, clean the area and prevent him from visiting there. Praises are to be used as positive feedbacks. Never punish him as it could further stress him.

Patience, praises and flexibility will do the job. With those you will retrain your cat fast

You can’t stop a cat scratching. No, no way, as it is more like a basic need for him. But you can stop your cat from scratching furniture or other valuable goods, easily.

<img data-attachment-id='4' data-orig-size='1024,768' data-liked='0'width="150" height="112" src="http://understandingyourcat.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/cat.jpg?w=150&h=112" class="attachment-thumbnail" alt="cat" title="cat" />

It is impossible to stop a cat scratching. No, no way, it is in his genes and it is a basic requirement for him (Scratching is not a bad cat behavior at all). But there is another story. You can stop a cat scratching your valuable furniture or other goods (A cat scratching furniture is not a bad cat behavior too. You will know the reason after reading this article)

Why do cats scratch? It helps to sharpen there nails and it is a good exercise. Debris gets stuck in nails with time. It is possible to clean the nails by scratching. Sometimes they simply do it because it feels good and it is fun. We should not disturb their joy, should we? You can make a scratching post or buy one (two would be better). Place these posts near where they scratch often. When cat gets used to the post, all your valuable goods are protected. Applying catnip on the posts will make them more appealing to the cat(s). Favorite scratching post would be different from cat to cat. So, you will have to choose a wooden, rubber or some kind of other material according to your cats’ flavor. Cats hate strong smells like wood polish, garlic and lemon. Apply one such polish or use an air freshener.

To avoid your cat scratching your valuable goods, put some balloons near the area it is used to scratch. When balloons get exploded, it will associate the area with fear.

Any cat treats the furniture in his house as its’ own goods. So, it will mark them visually by scratching. It helps them to recognize them correctly. Cats don’t know the prizes of this furniture. So be more patient and kind to your lovely pet
